There is a rich, successful and varied tradition of sports in Ballinamere N.S.
The area has a strong link to the GAA, and the school has mirrored this with successful teams in hurling, camogie and boys and girls football. A qualified GAA coach usually attends to all classes in term three. The local GAA club have been extremely helpful over the years, from allowing use of facilities to regular gifts of equipment and inspirational visits to the school by successful adult teams. The school participates an Indoor and Astroturf blitzes, skills competitions and the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Championships every year.
Far from being exclusively linked to GAA, the school has long-standing links with other sports. Swimming lessons have been organised for many years now, first in Clara and now in Tullamore’s Aura facility. Children have occasionally represented the school at swimming galas.
For some years now, the school has been very ably represented by athletes. The school participates in annual cross-country competitions and compete for the Colin Dunne Trophy in the Offaly Primary Schools Championship every summer. Boys and Girls teams have won this important event in the recent past. Tullamore Harriers AC do great work in organising these events for our children.
The school strive to try new activities and sports. Tag Rugby has proven a popular venture and the children enjoy lessons and an end-of-season blitz in the grounds of Tullamore RFC. We are thankful to the club for these opportunities.
Another popular and relatively new sport in the school is basketball. The school has participated in a number of blitzes and has experienced lots of success. Parents have been a driving force behind this addition.
The staff, parents and pupils of Ballinamere N.S. are very proud of our efforts and successes across the variety of sports in which we participate. We hope this will continue in the future as we do our best to be a school community that respects traditions and eagerly welcomes new challenges.
